Amphibians & Reptiles

Antarctica is the only continent that has no native amphibian species.  Amphibians and reptiles are very important vertebrates on the Pacific Islands. Surprisingly, given their importance, there are only six reptiles native to the Hawaiian Islands and all of them live in the sea. The rest of Hawaii's reptiles and amphibians are invaders.  Learn more about amphibians from the NBII Pacific Basin Information Node website

Taxa (different kinds of animals, plants and other life)

Tracking the status and trends of the Nation's birds, fish, mammals, amphibians, insects, plants, and other organisms is necessary to understand their distribution, abundance, status as endangered or threatened, and other characteristics of value to resource managers and the public. The Status and Trends of Biological Resources Program houses ornithologists, mammalogists, herpetologists, and other scientists that work together to provide the most comprehensive picture of the Nation's diverse biological resources.
