I. Key Department News:
- Nationwide Differential GPS Study: During the week of May 19, Karl Brown of CBI coordinated the effort to
verify positioning and timing requirements for all DOI bureaus for a nationwide differential Global Positioning System
(GPS) study initiated by the Department of Transportation. Brown will work with USGS Headquarters staff members
to assemble a DOI summary report. The Deputy Assistant Secretary for Water and Science will represent DOI at the

- BRD Children's Butterfly Web Site Receives Top Rating: The BRD Children's Butterfly Site
<http://www.mesc.nbs.gov/butterfly.html> has been selected as one of the top children's Web sites--with a 5/5
rating--by Berit's Best Sites for Children <http://db.cochran.com/li_recent:Theopage:theo:30:0.db>, a highly respected
children's Web site maintained by Cochran Communications, an international leader in Internet publishing. Accolades
go to Paul Opler (CBI), Earlene Swann (MESC), Jon Richards (MESC), and others in BRD for their work in making

- Outreach Assistance: On May 22, Maury Nyquist (CBI) assisted a representative of Mission Research in
determining radar modeling requirements. The firm inquired about how to obtain nationwide vegetation and terrain data.
Nyquist provided information as well as Web site addresses for different types of information, particularly noting sites
where Mission Research could directly download data. (Maury Nyquist, Denver, 303/202-4217)
