I. Key Department News:

  • Gambian Environmental Agency Representative Visit: In October, Nyada Yoba Baldeah of the National Environment Agency of The Gambia will visit the USGS Center for Biological Informatics and the USGS Rocky Mountain Mapping Center in Denver. His visit is being sponsored by the EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Baldeah is working on the Environmental Information System component of the Gambia Environmental Action Plan (GEAP), a World Bank-funded program. His desire is to gain an understanding of and appreciation for strategies and technologies used in environmental information management. In his own words, he needs a "broad overview of the management and application of GIS facilities in environmental and natural resources" management. (Terry D'Erchia, Denver, 303-202-4264)
  • European Symposium on Remote Sensing: On September 20, James Getter (CBI) will present the paper "Effect of spatial resolution on thermal IR sensing of plant canopies" at the European Symposium on Remote Sensing in Barcelona, Spain. (Jim Getter, Greenbelt, MD, 301/286-8635).
