I. Key Department News:
- USDA Uses LUHNA Maps in Atlas. The USDA National Agroforestry Center will include selected maps from the USGS Land Use History of North America (LUHNA) Web site in their Midwest Regional Atlas for Conservation Planning. The atlas is a compilation of maps produced by various government and non-profit agencies that help provide an overview of issues that may impact conservation planning. The Midwest Regional Atlas for Conservation Planning Web site, currently accessible only with Internet Explorer, will include LUHNA maps representing the percentage of land in farms by county to help users better understand the historical expansion of U.S. agriculture. Encompassing the time of pre-European settlement to the present, the USGS LUHNA program seeks to understand the relationships between human land use and land cover change and works to assess future implications of these interactions.
