Vegetation Mapping Programs

The Center for Biological Informatics manages vegetation mapping programs that support sound ecosystem management. Currently, the center maintains programs in support of the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that classify, describe, and map vegetation communities. The vegetation information and data developed by these programs provide the structure for framing and answering critical scientific questions about vegetation communities and their relationships to environmental processes across the landscape. Access to these data provides resource managers with a consistent means to inventory and monitor plant communities and to characterize the biological components of different ecosystem units.
