Gold StarTITLE: Inventory of Endangered, Threatened and Rare Plant and Animal Species Within the Loup Rivers Basin - a Biodiversity Project

SUBMITTING BUREAU: Bureau of Reclamation

Originating Office: Great Plains Regional Office

DATE SUBMITTED: April 7, 1995

FY 98 PRIORITY: Central Region Need Met, No additional work is anticipated or required on this BIN.
FY 97 PRIORITY: Central Region 6
FY 96 PRIORITY: Midcontinent Region 8

BRD REGION: Central

DESCRIPTION OF NEED: This is a 2-year project to document the diversity and presence of endangered, threatened and rare plant and animal species and their habitat use within the Loup Rivers drainage basin. Data to be gathered include identification of habitat types, inventory/survey of rare species and their habitat, documenting occurrences of rare species, collecting baseline data, developing GIS resource layers and transcribing data into a biological conservation database.

MANAGEMENT PROBLEM WITH NEED: A large number of species on the Nebraska Heritage Program's list of rare plants and animals are of known or possible occurrence within this drainage basin. Such species as the interior least tern, whooping crane, prairie fringed orchid, piping plover, American burying beetle, endangered river otter, redbelly dace, pearl dace, and blacknose shiner are known to occur in the area. Data for such species are either fragmented or lacking.

RESULTS OF BRD-INITIATED COMMUNICATION:

This BIN was discussed by Duane and Jill on 9/3/96. Jill believes this BIN was submitted to the Great Plains Regional Office in Billings, MT in 1995. Because of pending data needs for EIS and EA work, the BOR funded this work through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and they are doing the aquatic/fisheries studies. The Commission subcontracted the remainder of the work to the University of Nebraska-Kearney for the remaining animal and plant inventories and database development. The first progress report is due in December 1996 and BRD-MESC will receive a copy.

DATE SUBMITTED TO REGIONAL OFFICE: September 3, 1996
