Below is a report summarizing the status of BSE country by country. I am including this for those of you constantly asked about CWD risk to people. We are approaching 200,000 cases world-wide of BSE. That has resulted in exposure to millions of people, with the consequence of about 135 known cases of vCJD in humans. Considering that the total known cases of CWD is barely approaching 1000, and that the number of people exposed to venison from affected areas is very small, even if CWD were as transmissible to humans as BSE (and we don't know that it is), the number of human cases of this disease would be miniscule. In contrast, so far in 2002, there have been 3873 clinical cases of WNV in people with 246 mortalities.

This is not to diminish the potential importance of CWD to wildlife populations, but it does at least put the zoonotic dimension into a bit of perspective.
