National Resources Preservation Program

The U.S. Geological Survey Biological Resources Discipline (BRD) is responsible for managing the Research National Resources Preservation Program (NRPP) funds, the BRD researchers, and peer review. The National Park Service (NPS) is responsible for managing the places in which the research is to be done, for managing the relationship of research as a park use to the other uses of parks, and for applying the results of the research through its resource and human use management actions. BRD and NPS have to work together to obtain the best investigator for each project to obtain the best scientific and usable results for the available funds and time.

The purpose of the Research NRPP is to couple urgent, well justified management needs with valid science. Making this coupling work to the benefit of the Research NRPP requires true collaboration involving all appropriate elements of BRD and NPS working together at all stages of the process, from natural resource problem identification to reporting and application of research results. The measure of success for this crucial working partnership is the timely delivery of usable, park-oriented, scientific knowledge to park managers.
