International Meeting
on Paleoarthropodology Ribeirao Preto Sao Paulo State, Brazil September 2-8, 2000
Chairman:
Dr. Rafael Gioia Martens-Neto <mtnsneto@ffclrp.usp.br>
http://www.paleoartropodologia.saopaulo.net/ 4th European Ostracodologists (EO) Meeting Cukorova University, Adana, Turkey July
20, 1999
Dr.
K.G. McKenzie and Dr. Michael Keen
Closing
Session Panel:
Dr. Nuran Sonmez-Gokcen, Atike Nazik,
Michael Keen, Kenneth McKenzie
Dr.
Nazik opened the proceedings by reading a letter from Dr.
Sylvie Crasquin-Soleau, President of the EO and Organizing
Secretary for the previous EO meeting at Bierville, Paris, 1996. The letter urged Dr. Crasquin-Soleau to change the dates of
the EO meeting at Adana from May 20, as originally proposed by the
Turkish Organizing Committee, to July, because this would be more
acceptable for European colleagues.
Dr. Nazik continued that, after some consultation, the Turkish
Organizing Committee had complied with this request.
There were 67 registrations for the Adana meeting, representing
27 countries. At the
meeting itself, only 30 delegates attended: Australia:
1 (K.G. McKenzie) Canada:
1 (Q. Siddiqui) Egypt:
2 (A.M.T. Elewa, accompanying person) India:
1 (A. Bhandari) Great Britain: 1 (M. Keen) Poland:
2 (J. Szczechura, E. Olempska) Russia:
1 (N. Aladin) Spain:
3 (A. Baltanas, P. Alcorlo, L. Arqueros) Sweden:
1 (S. Majoran) Turkey:
17 (N. Sonmez-Gokcen, A. Nazik, U. Eafak, C. Tonolu, M. Duru,
A. Altansacl,
C. Kubanc, O. Kulkoyluolu, H. Sar, N. Avar, K. Gurbuz, M.Kfd, O. Ozulo,
N. Kubanc, G. Orunc, U. I, N. Akca)
The
Turkish delegates were from Ankara, Istanbul, Dzmir, and Adana.
Dr. Nazik expressed her own and the organizing committee's deep
disappointment at this poor attendance, the absentees including those
who had urged the change in dates.
The sentiment was strongly supported by Dr. Keen and McKenzie,
both of whom (as it happened) would have preferred the original dates
for a meeting in May. As
the only ex-President of the EO who was present, Dr.
Mike Keen then took the chair, noted that the main item of
business for the Session was a decision on the location for the next
EO meeting, and called for nominations.
After some hesitation, Dr. Nick
Aladin again suggested St. Petersburg (as he had done
previously at Prague and Bierville), but added that, with so many of
our Russian colleagues now retired, he would need to consult with
others at St. Petersburg. Dr.
Keen then suggested that a final decision be shelved for the moment.
Dr. Aladin asked what the date would be--provided that a
Russian offer was made. Dr. Keen replied that, following a consensus reached at
Greenwich in 1998, the EO and International Meetings should be two
years apart, the date would be 2003 (two years after Shizuoka, Japan
in 2001). The
remaining business was the election of a President and Vice President
for the interim until the next EO meeting.
Dr. Keen noted that it was conventional that the Organizing
Secretary for the current meeting be elected next President of the EO.
Accordingly, Dr. Atike Nazik
was nominated, and, after some encouragement from Dr.
Sonmez-Gokcen, she accepted the nomination.
There being no other nominations, Dr. Keen announced that Dr.
Atike Nazik was elected President of the EO and this was carried with
acclamation by all present. For
Vice-President, Dr. Angel Baltanas
(Spain) was nominated. He
accepted the nomination. Dr.
Keen then declared Dr. Baltanas the duly elected Vice-President of the
EO and this was also carried by acclamation.
Dr. McKenzie spoke about
the excellent organization of the 4th EO Meeting, including
the accomodations at the University guesthouses, meals, transport, and
attention to the needs of the individual delegates, then proposed a
vote of thanks to the Turkish Organizing Committee, in particular Dr.
Nazik, the Organizing Secretary, and Dr.
Nuran Sonmez-Gokcen, Turkey's
senior ostracodologist. This
was seconded by Dr. Keen and carried with warm acclamation by the
meeting. On behalf of the
Turkish Organizing Committee, Dr. Sonmez-Gokcen then thanked all
colleagues who had attended the 4th EO Meeting at Adana,
and looked forward to the next meeting.
This ended the Closing Session.
Post-Meeting
Field Excursion The
following day, a Field Excursion was organized to the Tertiary Adana
Basin. The guidebook was
written by Drs. Kemal Gurbuz and
Nuran Sonmez-Gokcen, and the
field trip was guided by Dr. Gurbuz.
It began in the northwest basin among reefal carbonates of
Aquitanian-Burdigalian age (Karaisal Formation), then to sandy shallow
marine facies (Kaplankaya Formation), followed by shales, limestones,
and submarine fans of Langhian age (Cingoz Formation), and then to
Serravallian sandstones and shales (Guvenc Formation), before a
delightful lunch at Karaisal Vocational School of Cukorova University.
After lunch we visited Tortonian siliciclastics and carbonate
rocks (Kuzgun Formation), including deltaic and meandering river
deposits, with associated large oysters and other lamellibranchs,
cross-bedded conglomerates and point bar deposits, plus an important
tuff member. The
excursion ended in the Messinian-Pliocene Hander Formation with gypsum
and associated fluvial sediments.
Thus, we visited a considerable variety of marine and nonmarine
facies and fossiliferous beds, including corals, pelecypods,
gastropods, plant fossils, as well as planktic forams and ostracods.
All delegates thoroughly enjoyed the excursion. Summing
up, in spite of the disappointing attendance, an excellent EO Meeting
was organized at Adana, with stimulating oral presentations and poster
sessions, and a friendly atmosphere accompanied by the renowned warm
Turkish hospitality. Thank
you Adana!

The Organizing Committee is planning the following two sessions:
This
theme will concentrate upon evaluating the potential of applying
Ostracoda to study of long- and short-term environmental changes
caused by either geological events or human activities.
This
theme will focus on the latest developments in reconstructing
phylogeny, in understanding the origin of Ostracoda and the
relationship of Ostracoda to other crustaceans, and in the taxonomy,
ontogeny, and ecology of Ostracoda.
Participants are invited to
present scientific papers in the sessions either as oral presentations
or posters. Those wishing
to present papers must submit an abstract on or before December 10,
2000. Some renowned
researchers (geochemists, micropaleontologists, and crustacean
researchers) will be invited as keynote speakers.
The contributions of the sessions will be edited and published
in international journals in the geological and biological sciences.
Six field excursions are planned:
The official language of the meeting will be English.
Suggestions for workshops are most welcome.
We are also planning a cultural programme and sightseeing tour
