Microorganisms as foraminifera, ostracods, radiolarians, diatoms, calcareous nannoplankton, dinoflagellates, pollen and spores are among the main groups in micropaleontology. Their significance for biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental reconstructions is well known. These microorganisms are very sensitive to environmental alterations, both natural and anthropogenic. They can be successfully used as indicators of stressed environments, including anthropogenic pollution. This is especially important for the coastal zone which is strongly affected by human intervention and where these microorganisms are widely distributed.

The conference will introduce to a broader audience the value of microorganisms for a variety of applications, many of which are not generally associated with traditional micropaleontology. It may be presumptuous to call such applications the pointer to the future of micropaleontology, but they may, in part, better focus current discussions regarding the direction micropaleontology will take.

The conference will address in particular: microorganisms as indicators of naturally stressed environments (global warming, oxygen deficiency and anoxia, oil-gas seepages, hypersaline and low saline environments, earthquakes); indicators of productivity; indicators of environments anthropogenically polluted by heavy metals, domestic sewage, oil, pesticides, fuel ash.

Topics:
Taxonomy
Assemblage structure and spatial distribution
Density and diversity
Pathology of soft tissue
Morphology of the shells
Chemistry of the shells
Methodology and scientific devices
Statistical treatment and mathematical modeling

Objective
The aims of the meeting are to bring together ostracodologists from different countries to discuss their problems and fascinations with Ostracoda. Both oral and poster sessions will be held. The meeting subject is "Studies on Ostracoda": i-Paleontology and Biostratigraphy of Ostracoda from Palaeozoic to Recent, ii-Evolution, Environment and Paleogeography, iii-Reproductive Biology, Genetics, Morphology and Shell Chemistry.

Language of Meeting
The official language of the meeting will be English. But, contributions in German and French may also be accepted, if required.

Activities
A technical field trip to the Neogene sequence of the Adana Basin will immediately follow the main technical sessions of the meeting. After this, a tourist trip to the well-known volcanic area of Cappadocia will be organized for interested persons.

In addition, free daily cultural and touristic trips in Adana will be arranged for accompanying persons during the technical sessions. Further information will be given with the Second Circular.

Application

Ostracodologists interested in attending the meeting should complete the attached application form and mail it to the Meeting Secretariat before 31 December 1997. The Second Circular will be sent only to those who respond to this first announcement.

Accommodation
Participants will be accommodated at the University Guest Houses, or arrangements can be made with city hotels if this is preferred.

Costs
Registration fee: US $150 entitles you to a copy of the Abstracts booklet and Proceedings volume, plus morning and afternoon refreshments, and free transport to and from the Conference halls by campus buses. Accommodation at the University Guest Houses is very moderately priced. Good meals will be provided in the Guest House restaurants (breakfast/dinner) and at the University Cafeteria (lunch). Details of the related costs will be given in the Second Circular, which includes booking arrangements for accommodation and meals. Costs of the technical field trip to the Adana Basin and the touristic trip to the Cappodocia will also be advised in the Second Circular, with their booking arrangements.

Adana
Adana is the fourth largest city in Turkey, bounded by the Taurus Mountains to the north and the Mediterranean to the south. Its climate is typical of the northern Mediterranean region. The average temperature is around 14-180C during the winter and 30-380C during summer. The average temperature during the period of the meeting is likely to be around 25-300C. Adana is situated on the edge of the Seyhan Delta and is the chief city of the Cukurova region, renowned for its rich agriculture, citrus fruit production, and textile manufacture. It also boasts a long and varied cultural history. Cukurova is one of the new universities in Turkey, established in 1973, and is situated on a large, delightful campus, overlooking the Seyhan Dam lake on the northern edge of the city.

Transportation
Adana is really accessible by plane or bus from Istanbul or Ankara. The Turkish bus system in particular is highly efficient and cheap using modern Mercedes-Benz buses and the good Turkish roads. Istanbul-Adana is 14 hours by bus; the Ankara-Adana bus trip takes 6 hours. The geology of the Anatolian Plateau is well exposed along most of the route.
