Dr. Sam Holland, SD State Veterinarian, just sent out a news release on the rapidly emerging cases of equine WNV. Case numbers are climbing steadily with upwards of 40 or more clinical cases now reported. Butte County (far west bordering Montana and Wyoming) now has 3 equine cases. In addition, Stanley, Hughes and Walworth counties (about center of the state) have reported a few cases. Almost all counties in the eastern third of the state (with the exception of the extreme southeast) have reported WNV. All told, 25 counties are WNV positive. Equine cases are running ahead of avian cases in South Dakota. The assumption at this time is that the massive number of birds traveling through South Dakota at this time of year are bringing the virus to that state, but equine are more closely observed than these large populations of wild birds.
