Differential Strategy, Software Choices, Data Fusion and Related Software Under Development
Based on the related use and parallel DGPS service needed for handheld,
system, or survey quality tripod station, the use of the base station provides
the necessary earth tie to bring the coordinate position to a known and
controlled point on the earth's surface. The user should evaluate the project
needs, accuracy requirements, and needed resolutions to accomplish the purpose
of the measurements.
Software features that import Arc View shapefiles from GPS data are no
longer a requirement. A simple example involves the use of PLGR+96 data. These
data can be exported to a windows environment with the ASCII out function, with
full metadata of the position type and accuracy. Using the editor of your
choice, break the comma-delimited data into columns, add headings, and save as
tabular data in .dbf format. Open ArcView, Add Event Theme, Add Table, and read
in the data to Arc View. This three-step process involves data export, washing
the data with an editor like Excel, and saving the product as a table for
reading by the GIS.

Data Fusion and Related Software under development
Data attribution can be accomplished by a variety of methods. Several data
logger products allow GPS data enrichment through data dictionary methods, or
simple text attribution. Several current efforts may provide what you require,
including Fieldworker, Windows CE, Corvallis Microtechnology, and many others.
Contact your Bureau coordinator for leads on the developments in data fusion in
the GPS arena. The Department of Interior Coordinators will meet at the Institute
of Navigation (ION) GNSS GPS Conference in
September 26-29, 2006 in Fort Worth Convention Center, Fort Worth, Texas. Consider
attending this event to learn more about data fusion options and equipment at the
vendor area.
Palm Pilot software for Garmin GPS
Palmpilot freeware package that is good to use
for those data collecting with a Garmin. A Palmpilot is good to store
data on while in the field if you fill the Garmin memory. This software
allows you to catalog, review (visually) while in the field and dump
your tracklogs and waypoints by catagory when you get back into the
office to any Garmin enabled software. Use the posted 4.3 version and
not the pre-release version he has posted. There is a bug in the
pre-release version that the author has to fix. The Palm Pilot software
for Garmin GPS maybe reached at the following web address:

Palm Pilot software for the Fieldworker
MapinHand is designed specifically for the field worker with a PDA. It offers
intuitive features to access, visualize and act upon real-time data from
central corporate databasesÑthe data workers need to make smart decisions.
Plus, MapinHand is built using Java servlet technology and will run on any
web server that supports servlets, offering multi-threaded scalability and
flexibility for deploying to large contingents of field workers. The Palm
Pilot software for the Fieldworker maybe reached at the following web address:
