GPS - Federal PLGR+96 Recommended Accessory Use for
Maximizing Performance for US Federal Civilian Agencies

Last Modified:10/4/05 1:50 PM

Recommended Accessory Use for Maximizing Performance:

The remote antenna generally has a higher gain than the pop up, and an inexpensive PVC range pole will assist in tracking in canopy environments. With some exceptions, this is the optimum method for the best position fixes. Cable problems, snagging on tree branches can be reduced with the new bottom exit AERO antenna available from 3D as an alternative high gain antenna. Based on field trials (open sky) this alternative antenna yields a 2-5 db gain (higher C/N ratio by 2-5 units) over the hockey puck type remote antenna from Rockwell, and the bottom threads can be mounted with a ¾” PVC adapter to an inexpensive range pole. These will become available in December, 1999 as an alternative. Beginning in December, 1999, the 3D company will also supply the PLGR accessory kit at a reduced rate from the accessory total from Rockwell.

Cable for the remote antenna has been a weak link. The SMA connectors pull loose over time. Order a flexible 3.1- meter replacement cable from 3D for $53.

Use external power to protect your performance. The AA holders and NiCad batteries yield about 200-300 minutes of service, and performance degrades at the end of battery life. Reset (RST) the battery counter in the STATUS menu when you change the battery, so that you can estimate your elapsed time. Use a camcorder battery with your cigarette lighter adapter to avoid frequent battery changes. For a well tested camcorder battery see Navtech GPS - Leatex Battery Kit, P/N 6240-3, $32.00 w/charger. This one seems a little better than the Multiplier version because the battery harness is detachable from the battery and you can charge the battery from your car cigarette light plug. It is also cheaper. URL: www.navtechgps.com, 1-800-628-0885.

Overall, the Agency GPS Coordinator is responsible for knowing where that PLGR+96 is and the Status of the PLGR+96. The Agency GPS Coordinator is also responsible for making arrangements for encrypting the returned PLGR+96, and making sure it is returned to the user.

REMEMBER:
ALL GPS PPS ACTIVITIES WILL BE SUPPORTED AND CONDUCTED USING THE ESTABLISHED ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: GPS User - Agency GPS Coordinator - Departmental GPS Coordinator - Federal Civilian Agency PPS Coordinator - Pentagon.
