GPS - Federal PLGR+96 Maintenance for US Federal Civilian Agencies
Last Modified: 10/4/05 1:35 PM
READERSHIP:
All Federal employees; Modified for DOI use. The PLGR+96 receiver utilizes the
Precise Positioning Service (PPS) of the Dept. of Defense Global Positioning
System. These receivers are P-Y code type, with recurring maintenance required.
The maintenance issues for the PLGR+96 receiver include:
- Rekeying (encryption) about every 12 months. Regardless of your
software upgrades or time of purchase, these PPS receivers must be rekeyed
to maintain their accuracy. If not rekeyed, they will revert to Standard
Positioning Service (SPS) operation, with the degraded accuracy due to
Selective Availability. Prior to rekey, the user will obtain and supply the
encryption site with a replacement memory battery from either Rockwell,
Int. or 3-D Marketing LLC. To order from Rockwell call Mindy Ewing at
319-295-3544 or from 3-D Marketing call Dean Steeves at 516-425-6221. DO NOT
replace this battery or open the bottom battery compartment yourself, as you
will lose your crypto key and the PPS capability.
- Note for any Field Station and Center Coordinators or personal who are managers
of PLGRS, and have 8 or more PLGRS, there is another place to order memory
batteries called Energy Sales. The reqiurement is a $50.00 minimum order.
To order call 650-969-0800 and the part number is LS14500.
- Power. Most performance problems stem from dented AA holders or Nicad
batteries that do not hold a charge due to 'topping off'. Replace AA holders
either from Rockwell, Int. or by calling 3-D Marketing LLC. Order by calling
Rockwell at 319-295-3544 or 3-D Marketing at 516-425-6221. Consider a camcorder
gel-cell battery for 12 volt external power.
- Accessories: PLGR+96 battery holders, antennas, cables and other parts
are available directly from either Rockwell by calling Mindy Ewing at 319-295-3544
or from 3-D Marketing by calling Dean Steeves at 516-425-6221, and using your
project government charge card. You can order any part you need without prior
authorization. Check with your group leader or agency coordinator about possible
bulk buys for consumable items like battery holders.
- Upgrade: For past 1995 purchases (tan, PLGR+ baseline 3 units), an
optional $600 upgrade to PLGR+96 will increase your functionality. See
the procurement web page for details, costs, and capabilities of this upgrade,
or view the basic video supplied with your kit. Order this video through your
agency coordinator, if needed.
- Note that all green PLGR+96 (baseline 4) units contain this upgrade at the time of purchase.
REMEMBER:
ALL GPS PPS ACTIVITIES WILL BE SUPPORTED AND CONDUCTED USING THE ESTABLISHED
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: GPS User - Agency GPS Coordinator - Departmental GPS Coordinator
- Federal Civilian Agency PPS Coordinator - Pentagon.
