GPS - Federal PLGR+96 Trouble-Shooting for US Federal Civilian Agencies
Last Modified: 10/4/05 1:40 PM
TROUBLE-SHOOTING TIPS:
- Receiver "will not track" or "has poor accuracy." Do not
stare at the Continuous OLD position screen waiting for improvement! Go to
your STATUS screen and push 4 down arrows to view the tracking your unit is
using. The 4 rows of data are the SV number (space vehicle #), the CN ratio
(Code to Noise = signal strength), the code (CD) you are tracking (C/A or
Y-code) and the Status (ST) of your receiver on that satellite (S = searching,
T = tracking, I= Interfered, R = reacquiring) If you are not tracking
satellites, use this 4 tiered method to determine the problem:
- Crypto. From the Position page, push MENU twice. In the second menu
screen, the word CRYPTO should appear in the lower left. If not, contact
your agency coordinator for rekeying.
- Self-Test Failure. This will appear in the start up screen, or can
be seen in the STATUS menu by pushing the MENU button until status appears.
Make the STATUS menu option blink by using the right and left arrow keys.
When blinking, use an up arrow in the status menu to view the self-test status.
If it says Self Test OK, that is not the problem. If it says PPS-SM Failure, or
Self-Test Fail, go back to the status menu page and use the right key to
select the TEST menu. Run (Activate) the self test; it will take about
3-4 minutes, and will have a screen display and brightness test that you
will need to push buttons to execute. This will clear the self-test
failure. If not, contact your agency coordinator for advanced assistance.
- Mixed mode selected in the satellite option field. In the SETUP menu
on the CONTinuous mode page, the ALL-Y option must NOT be set. The alternative
MIXED mode must be set, or you will not track satellites.
- WAGE mode toggled off. This gives up about half of your accuracy by
not using Wide Area GPS Enhancement (WAGE). An open sky position fix will
yield about a 4-meter ellipse with WAGE, and about an 8-meter fix without it.
The only case where this option would be off involves the use of differential
real-time input.
- "Low Memory Battery Warning" results from either a 16-18 month old
memory battery, or a broken solder joint in both tan and green PLGR+/PLGR+96
units. This is a warranty item know as a 'memory battery reflow' covered
by Rockwell, unless additional damage has resulted in shock to the case,
handle, or screen. Repairs for units past the 3 year warranty will be
charged to the user, unless the only problem is the reflow needed.
In all cases, any PLGR+96 returned to Rockwell for warranty repair, must be
returned to the Agency Encryption Site (AES). The Department of the Interior
Site is in Denver. The BLM, FWS, and NPS have keying operations at other sites.
Contact your DOI Agency or
Bureau GPS coordinator for information on encryption for your Bureau.
REMEMBER:
ALL GPS PPS ACTIVITIES WILL BE SUPPORTED AND CONDUCTED USING THE ESTABLISHED
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: GPS User - Agency GPS Coordinator - Departmental GPS Coordinator
- Federal Civilian Agency PPS Coordinator - Pentagon.
Maintenance and related questions on the PLGR+96 receiver should be directed
to your DOI Agency or Bureau
GPS coordinator. DOI coordination questions can be directed to
Karl Brown at (970) 225-3591; fax (970) 225-3585; or emailed below. Rekey scheduling
and trouble-shooting questions can be directed to William Oatfield at (303) 236-5050 x274.
