Description:

Abstract:

This is an Arc/Info polygon coverage showing the boundary of Arches National Park, Utah, as of October 30, 1998. On that date, Congress passed Public Law 105-329, expanding the previous boundary by 3,140 acres to include the area known as the Lost Spring Canyon Addition.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data is to provide digital documentation of the historical development of Arches National Park. The intended use of all data in the park's GIS library is to support diverse park activities including planning, management, maintenance, research, and interpretation.

Supplemental_Information:

The calculated difference between the Arc/Info coverages of the previous boundary established in 1971 and the 1998 boundary is 3,141.466 acres. This figure varies by 1.466 acres from the officially reported increase of 3,140 acres. The difference can be attributed to arithmetic rounding contributions and/or minor variations in the boundary delineation, and is not considered significant.

The coverage was minimally attributed; the only user-defined attribute is ACRES, the number of acres contained in the polygon. No formal tests were conducted to verify the accuracy of the polygon boundary or the calculated acreage. There are discrepancies between the original report of the acreage comprising the Monument and the acreage calculated on the basis of this digital coverage.

Polygon topology was built for the coverage using the BUILD command in Arc/Info 8.1 for NT Windows. No dangling nodes, slivers or open polygons exist in the data.

The boundary of Arches National Park as it existed from the time of its establishment as a national park on November 12, 1971 was used as the basis for the updated 1998 boundary.

Process_Description:

The addition of 3,140 acres in the northeast section of the park necessitated an adjustment of the existing boundary. The modification was done by collecting GPS data along the boundary of the Lost Spring Canyon Addition using a Trimble ProXL unit. The GPS coordinates were differentially corrected, converted in Arc/Info to UTM NAD27 coordinates, and incorporated into the existing Arches boundary in Arc/Info. The software used for the digitization was Arc/Info 8.0.
