Vegetation Classification and Mapping at Fort Necessity National Battlefield
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: document
Description:
Abstract:
Locations of thematic accuracy assessment observation points at Fort Necessity National Battlefield. In this data set, the X, Y coordinates for two plots have been altered to protect rare plant species that could be vulnerable to collection.
Purpose:
Assess the thematic accuracy assessment of the vegetation association map created for Fort Necessity NationalBattlefield.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
To assess the thematic accuracy assessment of the vegetation association map, a stratified random sampling approach wasused, distributing the sampling effort across the eight vegetation associations. The number of samples per community type variedaccording to the rarity of the vegetation type, both in terms of number of polygons and polygon size, following accpeted USGS/NPSvegetation mapping protocols. The number of sampling points was reduced from that recommended by the protocol for relativelyabundant vegetation types that are reliably delineated from the aerial photography, such as conifer plantations, modified successionalforest, and successional old fields. In order to randomly determine the location of these sampling points in the polygons, the random number generator function inMicrosoft Excel was used to create 900 sets of random x,y coordinates that fell within the boundaries of the three units of FortNecessity. These coordinates were imported into ArcView 3.2 and overlain onto the vegetation map. The first coordinate listed inthe table of coordinates to fall within a polygon, at least 50 m from the polygon boundary, was selected. All other points that fellwithin that polygon were then deleted. This procedure was carried out until all 63 points were assigned. Each accuracy assessment point was then located in the field using a Trimble Geo XM GPS unit. Points were visited between 20040615 and 20040624.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The accuracy assessment plots shapefile was altered to create a shapefile suitable for public distribution. The X, Y coordinates for each plot that contains a rare plant species that could be vulnerable to collection were rounded as follows: the coordinate value was rounded up if the last three digits = 000-499; the coordinate value was rounded down if the last three digits = 500-999. Coordinates were altered in this manner for two plots. As a result, it is possible that some or all of these points now fall outside of a vegetation polygon or outside the park boundary. A field named "crd_alt" was added to the shapefile attribute table; the value for this field is "no" if the plot coordinates have not been altered and "yes" if the plot coordinates were altered.
