Other willow monocultures abut this assn. but are quite small. This assn. isn't defined in matrix, but is distinctly different than adjacent communities, which are a FESCAM - forb rich mesic meadow and ABILAS/VACMEM forest. The assn. isn't real large (about 0.5 ac) but seems important due to difference in composition.PENFLO present outside of plot. Plants are very widely scattered.Stand is late seral. Very extensive cover of this assn. in this general area, on north-facing slopes. This assn. repeats as "stringers" in avalanche areas along this slope, between ABILAS forest. Heavy ALNVIR cover, with fairly heavy understory forb development.Water table close to surface. Zone along small river with this assn. Small pools with brackish water are scattered along zone in small depressions. Understory is forb-rich. This zone isn't flooded as frequently as that in plot 0015, but still would be considered in floodplain. ABILAS with CLIUNI forest borders this zone on upland side. Since disturbance (flooding) is so infrequent, this assn. could progress to ABILAS/CLIUNI habitat type climax.Pretty shrubby where vegetated. Mossy and gravelly in non-veg. areas. Conifers are establishing but ABILAS may not get to climax stage due to flood frequency. PICENG definitely more abundant and doing better than ABILAS, so may be a spruce habitat type instead of a subalpine fir. ABILAS seedlings are present in trace amounts.Small aspen stand surrounded by meadow to north and conifers (PINCON) to south and east. Lots of MAISTE, which we haven't seen before. Could be an elevational difference from other aspen plots. This assn. is bordered by PINCON with ARNCOR understory, but XERTEN is definitely dominant in area of plot.Dense carpet of VACSCO with patches of XERTEN. PINCON canopy cover is sparse. Probably due to dying crown from beetle infestation.Overall this south-facing slope has shallow undulating topography. This association seems to occupy shallow swales within the slope. Swales run N-S. Adjoining association on rises is AMEALN / mixed for/mixed grass. This may be transition zone (ecotone) between POPTRE and PINCON dominated assn.'s. Fairly wide band of mixed forest exists and extends for a great distance. This association follows depression in slope (aspect S-SE), in moister draw. Upslope on either side drier habitats support coniferous assn.'s. Transition zones between assn.'s are well defined. The assn. is bordered by coniferous (ABILAS & PINCON) forests on eastern and western sides, both a little upslope.See Plot Representativness CommentsThis assn. forms a mosaic with PINCON/ARNCOR assn. This association is mixed in with a PINCON/CALRUB assoc., which seems to be more prevalent where canopy is more closed. Lots of arnica and more coming in as season progresses. Cover estimates are based on arnica cover at maturity (higher cover than we see today).Very mesic forest with good diversity. HERLAN not real abundant, but it is present. ASTENG by far most abundant forb. HERLAN more abundant in moister zone, lower on slope.Association changes upslope; increasing cover in ARCUVA. AMEALN is still very dominant there. Plot lies above old road, but doesn't seem too affected by disturbance, other than couple of invaders (TAROFF & TRADUB).Opinings in this late-seral stand have higher cover of ALNVIR. Undergrowth is lush.Plot photo taken in NE direction. Plot center is marked with stake.Photo taken from Plot Center (roughly) looking northwest. Probably lost soil mantle in last burn and primary succession has to occur to get THUPLI back on site.Very even slope with no microrelief - some openings with tall shrub cover (area of thinner soils); very rocky-cobbly soils with little soil - excessively drained without doubt.Young seral stand with very even PINCON canopy and LAROCC.Old growth forest - just south is fringe around lake of near dog hair PICO-LAOC snags and veterans.Lower slope of ridge probably colluvium - but could be mantled with glacial till.Next to river - could be subirrigated to some degree.Probably salvage logged following last fire - some unulation within plot (not swales).Glacial drift/till as in terminal or lateral moraine.Steep sloped plot with scattered subalpine-fir and limber pine. Vegetation is mostly beargrass, VACMEM and VACSCO.Moist-mesic grass meadow bordered by olg-growth (low density) Ponderosa Pine. Sparsely populated by shrubs.Standing water about 3 in. deep. Sink into muck about 8 in. when stepping into water.Snow probably melts late in season.Plot may need to be revisited in late July to collect and ID Carex and pick up other species.Knapweed invasion upslope and moving into this area.More open areas in PINCON seem to support more VACCEA.Stand has a mosaic of ARNCOR, CALRUB and VACCEA in understory. Hard to fit into 1 association.Aspen clumped. Very diverse understory that changes with density of aspen, slope, ect. Mosaic of tree heights and densities along slope.Close proximity to trail. Some weedy species have moved into the shrubland, but haven't affected overall composition.Open patch is surrounded by coniferous forest (Douglas-fir & Subalpine fir), which is encroaching into shrubland.Dead whitebark pine and lodgepole pine, probably due to blisher rust infection.LVALu8 F 5Tw\@Park above hairpin turn on Two Med.
