See AAP417; Diervill/Phleum shrubland, or variation on type 29: boreal hazelnut/serviceberry shrubland such as serviceberry/Diervilla shrubland--not much Amelanchier, however, in this polygon.Mixed sedges/grasses although alder >25%. Site has look of 58 (sedge meadow) and 43 (sedge wet meadow) complex.Doesn't key to 19 (evergreen woodland). It's mixed woodland. Areas of woodland (new type?) denser (>25%) or less dense (<25%) canopy. Point according to GPS is just inside polygon 07b/0442 to North. Polygon should be re-drawn to include in "19" - 2344. Point was at representative site for rest polygon "19" - 2344.Does not key out to 01 (spruce - fir). Abies not in canopy; most abundant tree is Picea. Betula papyrifera is next most abundant. Borders on mixed or evergreeb - hard to tell which. Probably evergreen (=17); 55 if mixed.Note other 08/1651 (AAP 366) at E. Chickenbone Lake to east of this point.Polygon doesn't key. It's a forest version of 26 (black ash - mixed hardwoods swamp woodland). No Sphagnum or Mnium in bryophytes. Not an 08 - not 50% cover by Corylus; no Acer seen. Keys best to 54 (aspen - birch alliance) but almost entirely aspen. Add aspen community type?Marginal woodland (canopy is <25% in most of polygon); if considered woodland then keys to 23 although Rubus parviflorus is not more abundant shrub.Doesn't key out to 01 (spruce - fir forest - not evergreen woods; marginal woodland/forest. If woodland (appears to be <60% canopy to us) then keep to 23 (aspen - birch - boreal conifer woodland)31 (common juniper rocky krummholz) according to key is below 670 feet. Polygon is at 900 feet therefore doesn't key out if take other couplet (higher elevation).Keys out to 54 (aspen - birch alliance) because deciduous forest (not mixed as in #55). 54b works best (deciduous understory); no Acer saccharum. This polygon is variable, North part has more coniferous canopy.Hazelnut occurs on slopes of flat ridge top (not ON top); Rhus, Juniperus, Amelanchier on ridge top; 9 m diameter. Juniperus communis shows on photo.Point near border of two 23's; one to north (2552) is denser Populus canopy. Aspen - birch - boreal conifer / (thimbleberry) woodland (23) keys out as mixed evergreen - deciduous. Need deciduous category in key for this polygon. At point (ridgetop) tree canopy is less than 25% however > 25% if looking at larger area (trees are on slope of ridge).Doesn't key well (elevation problem). No Juniperus horziontalis seen. Site is at less than 670 feet for 31 AAP.Classified as forest however ~ 50% canopy cover therefore 7b.Polygon is not 41 or 43. This polygon is sedge meadow complex - dominated by Scirpus spp. and several Carex spp. are common (Carex rostrata and C. stricta not seen). Some Carex retorsa here.Keys best to type 23 (woodland, <60% canopy; mixed evergreen/dead) = aspen - birch - boreal conifer / (thimbleberry) woodland except it's deciduous woodland (>50% deciduous and < 25% evergreen) - not in key.No Abies seen in canopy (is in shrub layer) so doesn't fit description. Border line forest/woodland.54/1351 is SE of this polygon (see comments on community type for this 54).Very little Rubus parviflorus, canoy is ~50% at point but >60% in east part of polygon. 1942/55 is polygon west of this polygon. Great views of Grace Harbor and Washinton HarborIntensly moose-browsed to ca 6-7 ft (snow depth?)High know next to Washington Harbor, but no rock outcrops. Can't tell--is this a glacial deposit?Moist today--maybe it's usually saturated?Wetland around beaver pond, with open successional meadow (upland surrounding the wetland fringe) Odd polygon: pond, wetland fringe, meadow; mostly meadow, NOT wet. Polygon also has intermittantly flooded upland in mosaic with temporarily flooded palustrine areas.Polygon is ridge overlooking beaver pond to the westPolygon with trail through it.
