Abstract:

Vegetation map of Gateway National Recreation Area provides local names for vegetation types, as well as crosswalks to the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS), including association, alliance and formation level attributes. Crosswalks to the NVCS were determined on 29 June 2007. Because this dataset is post-accuracy assessment, the thematic accuracy is not known. The preliminary pre-accuracy assessment dataset has an accuracy that has been determined, however, this is the "corrected", but untested, dataset.

Purpose:

To provide an up-to-date digital geospatial vegetation database containing base line information about the park's vegetation associations to the park's resource managers in order to ensure effective, long-term management of the natural resources held in trust.

The Kappa index for the preliminary vegetation association map was 55.0% ± 2.5%, with the overall percent accuracy calculated as 56.1%. The Kappa index and errors of commission and omission reported for the vegetation association map and many vegetation associations fall below the USGS/NPS vegetation mapping protocol requirement of 80%. However, this low level of accuracy is typical for vegetation mapping efforts of large parks.

Based on the thematic accuracy assessment data, the preliminary vegetation association map was revised and corrected to create the final vegetation association map depicted in this shapefile. Therefore, the thematic accuracy of this final vegetation association map is greater than that reported above for the preliminary vegetation association map. However, re-assessing the thematic accuracy of the final vegetation association map would require another round of intensive field sampling. The costs of a second round of sampling do not seem justified simply to quantify the level of increased accuracy in the final map.

A vegetation cover type map was delineated from a 2003 digital aerial photo mosaic. One hundred and seventy-eight vegetation plots were sampled in the park. These data were analyzed to determine the number and distribution of vegetation associations present in the park. The vegetation cover type map was then revised and attributed with the association names. Then 458 thematic accuracy assessment points were randomly placed within the association map, following a stratified random sampling plan. Based on the accuracy assessment data, the association map was revised further.

Based on the accuracy assessment sampling data and the final classification of 35 vegetation associations, the association level map was revised again to correct errors and create more accurate vegetation association polygon boundaries. In this final revision, accuracy assessment data, plot data, field observations, aerial photography signatures, and topographic maps were used to revise polygon boundaries and attributes. Since Hoffman and Swineburne Islands of the Staten Island Unit were excluded from the air photo coverage, they were excluded from the final vegetation map as well. Polygons that were attributed with Anderson level II categories retained their attributes in the final map.
