George Washington Birthplace National Monument Vegetation Mapping Project - Spatial Vegetation Data
- Abstract:
-
This shapefile is an vegetation map of George Washington Birthplace National Monument, VA. It was developed by The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage in cooperation with North Carolina State University's Center for Earth Observation for the Northeast Region of the National Park Service. The data was created following general guidelines set forth by the USGS-NPS Vegetation Mapping Program. Map classes are crosswalked to the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) or level II of the Anderson's land use land cover classification system. Crosswalks to the USNVC were determined on June 15, 2007. The map is based on field work performed in the summer of 2002 and 2003 and photo interpretation of aerial photo mosaics produced by North Carolina State University Center for Earth Observation from photography obtained in October 2001 and February 2002.

- LOCAL_NAME
- A common or colloquial name for the map class. These names follow the Natural Communities of Virginia (Fleming et al 2006) or, if no appropriate name exists in Fleming et al (2006), the Association common name from the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) was used,or a park-specific common name was assigned. Nonstandard, park-specific units representing disturbed, cultural, or exotic vegetation were defined by Ecologists at the Division of Natural Heritage. Names for map classes not representing natural or semi-natural vegetation follow the Anderson level II land use and land cover classification scheme (Anderson et. al 1976).

This data set was created for George Washington Birthplace National Monument for use in natural resource management.
- From what previous works were the data drawn?
- How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
- Date: 15-Jul-2007 (process 1 of 1)
-
A preliminary vegetation map was created by viewing leaf-on (data captured 10-20-2001) and leaf-off (data captured 2-18-2002) digital photo mosaics, both in two and three dimensions. Areas of homogenous vegetation, land cover, and land use were delineated using ArcMap's onscreen digitizing tools. The minimum mapping unit was 0.5 hectares (1.25 acres). Polygons were attributed to the formation-level of the USNVC or Level II and Anderson's land use and land cover classification. All polygons were visited during map validation and field reconnaissance in the Summers of 2002 and 2003 and data were collected from six quantitative vegetation plots and 120 qualitative observations. Data were combined with data from other areas of the Mid-Atlantic Piedmont and Coastal Plain to refine the USNVC for the region. The draft formation-level vegetation map was then revised based on field information and reattributed with the association names from the refined USNVC.
- What similar or related data should the user be aware of?
- How well have the observations been checked?
The vegetation classification attribute of all polygons except those representing cultural / anthropogenic land use (i.e. agricultural fields, roads, built-up areas), was validated in the field by a VADNH Ecologist. At least 80% of each polygon was observed in the field and a classification was assigned. No formal thematic accuracy assessment was completed.
- How accurate are the geographic locations?
- How accurate are the heights or depths?
- Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Shapefile covers entire park area
- How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
Polygon geometry and topology were validated with ESRI ArcGIS v. 9.2 to find and correct any voids, slivers, overlapping polygons, or self-intersections. Any multipart polygons were converted to single-part polygons.
