This association follows depression in slope (aspect S-SE), in moister draw. Upslope on either side drier habitats support coniferous assn.'s. Transition zones between assn.'s are well defined. The assn. is bordered by coniferous (ABILAS & PINCON) forests on eastern and western sides, both a little upslope. |

Somewhat frequent flooding in area has kept forb and grass establishment low. TAROFF present, probably washed in from upstream seed source. |
Pretty shrubby where vegetated. Mossy and gravelly in non-veg. areas. Conifers are establishing but ABILAS may not get to climax stage due to flood frequency. PICENG definitely more abundant and doing better than ABILAS, so may be a spruce habitat type instead of a subalpine fir. ABILAS seedlings are present in trace amounts. |

Very infrequent flooding. TAROFF present, probably washed in and deposited from upstream seed source. |
Water table close to surface. Zone along small river with this assn. Small pools with brackish water are scattered along zone in small depressions. Understory is forb-rich. This zone isn't flooded as frequently as that in plot 0015, but still would be considered in floodplain. ABILAS with CLIUNI forest borders this zone on upland side. Since disturbance (flooding) is so infrequent, this assn. could progress to ABILAS/CLIUNI habitat type climax. |

Many braids of creek run through this assn., probably seasonally, but could be for much of growing season. Very wet area. |
This ass. is bordered by POPBAL/POPTRE, where the CORSER thins a bit, giving way to higher forb diversity and higher cover of OSMOCC. PICENG are scattered throughout both stands (both assn.'s) but regeneration isn't very successful. Might be too wet with surface water running through. |

Periodic avalanching. Trees are approx. 40 yrs. Looks like large avalanche initiated the stand. This zone is probably an avalanche runout area in years of normal snowfall (normal accumulation). |
This assn. is very common in this general area, especially in similar avalanche zones. |

Game trail along east side of plot. |
Periodic avalanching occurs. |
This is a narrow zone between creek and ABILAS forest. Snow avalanching has probably limited ABILAS establishment here, though there are seedlings (1 in plot). POPBAL is limited to sites immediately adjacent to stream. ACEGLA forms ribbon just upland from stream, with PRUAME mixed in toward edge fartherst from stream. AMEALN comes in as you move further from stream, then more ABILAS. |

Lots of avalanching here. Trees are about 20-25 yrs. old. |
Large area composed of this assn. Bordered by ABILAS forest with lots of shrubs (AMEALN, SORSCO, ACEGLA) to west. This large, shrubby area changes in composition as you move eastward on the trail. ALNVIR & MENFER become very dense and the diversity in shrubs decreases. |

Animal lays and game trails through plot. Elk herds seen in area. |
Game trail through plot and braided through entire area. Very well used area. Lots of elk chews on aspen. Weeds have spread into this area. |
Plot is similar to other POPBAL-POPTRE/CORSER plot we sampled, near Two Med. Lake, but not as wet. More SYMALB here. Weeds in plot are all over this area of park, due to introduction for stock feed in early 1900's. Can't find a representative plot in this area without Timothy! But diversity is still quite high here. CORSER is patchy so hard to call it dominant, but it's definitely well represented and dominant in about 30% of plot. |

Moderately dry POPTRE stand. Scattered ABILAS and PINCON occur around area, on same slope, though none were found in plot. In moist areas POPBAL is well represented with POPTRE. Game trail through plot. Old bear claw marks on aspen. Old elk chews on aspen. Animal burrow in plot. |
Disturbance from animal burrowing and game trails. |
This site is heavily dominated by HERLAN in the understory, which is different than other PINCON-POPTRE communities we've seen. In other areas the understory is more diverse, or dominated by OSMOCC or SYMALB (drier sites). This site is less sloped than the others. We'll probably try to sample more mixed aspen - conifer stands, attempting to represent different associations. ABILAS is present outside the plot. |

Timothy, introduced by humans in early 1900's, has changed composition of species. Though diversity is relatively high. |
Introduction of timothy has resulted in reduced cover of native bunchgrasses, particularly FESCAM & FESIDA, which are present in small patches of this grass/shrubland not yet invaded by PHLPRA. "Natural" vegetation in this assn. would have heavier cover of FESCAM & FESIDA, and less PHLPRA. |

|

This assn. forms a mosaic with PSEMEN/SYMALB forest along this slope. ARNCOR seems to be more prevalent in shallow draws, and SYMALB occurs in drier exposures. |

Scattered downed trees have created sizable openings in canopy. |
This area is dominated by old-growth PICENG (about 250 yrs). PICENG seedlings are present in understory, but ABILAS seedlings and saplings are dominant in that layer. Not sure if this site is PICENG/MENFER or ABILAS/GYMDRY assn. Very extensive stand of this type, with MENFER more dominant in upland sites and GYMDRY coming in closer to lake and along stream channels. PICENG age is about 250 yrs. |
