Partially forested shrub swamp in red maple-oak bottomland matrix. Shrub swamp is associated with linear drainage feature |
Notes of forest adjacent to HOFU.27 - Canopy dominant is red maple with occassional pin oak. Poorly drained soils. Forest grades into scrub/shrub in places where swale becomes poorly drained and surface flow is diffuse (mix of poison sumac, alder, young red maple). Photos 678-681. Photos of older slightly drier portion of stand. Pin oaks most common at edge of transition to scrub/shrub. A few pin oaks scattered amoung the red maple in rest of stand. Ground cover mostly Microstegeum and Carex pennsylvanica. |

Stand is a maturing oak-mixed hardwood type. Larger trees are 60-80 years old, forming closed canopy with some advanced regeneration. Little new regeneration. Some ericads present but heavily browsed. Some evidence of selective thinning, but trees not removed (25-35 cm DBH). Drought stress and premature leaf drop evident on some trees (birches, tulip poplar especially) |

Plot is typical of stand. Very little variation. Very occassionally a Quercus in the subcanopy. South of plot, where ground slopes south to French Creek to Hopewell Dam, stand becomes more mixed, but tulip poplar is still canopy dominant (60-70% relative cover) with associaties of red maple, black oak, black walnut (especially along creek), and black cherry. South of French Creek, stand is dominated by very large tulip poplars (60-80% relative canopy) with black walnut and nyssa as canopy associates. Carpinus is dominated in shrub layer. High microstegeum in ground layer. Understory denser but similar to area south of plot. |
