Abstract:

The Boundary of Mesa Verde National Park Colorado data shapefile (mevebdy.zip) depicts the boundaries of Mesa Verde National Park. Included are boundaries for the whole park and management units and wilderness areas within Mesa Verde National Park.

Purpose:

These data (mevebdy.zip) were derived from a coverage developed by staff of Mesa Verde National Park to support Park operations and management. The derived shapefile was used to support the vegetation mapping project conducted at Mesa Verde National Park.

All attributes were verified by visually comparing the attributes in the digital coverage against the original source material, but no formal tests were performed.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

ARC/INFO software is used to create and maintain topological relationships between features. There are no duplicate features, but coincident features are maintained within the coverage. Polygonal features begin and end at the same point and contain a single label. Linear features are continuous where appropriate, i.e., dangling arcs are removed if they are not required.

Completeness_Report:

These data depict the boundary of Mesa Verde National Park authorized by Congress as of 1963. Also included in these data are the lands the National Park Service owns and manages that are within and outside the authorized boundary as of 1978 and the Mesa Verde Wilderness designated by Congress in 1976. These boundaries are organized as separate region subclasses and no changes to these boundaries have occurred.

This shapefile was derived from a digital coverage provided by Mesa Verde National Park. The process used by the Park in creating the original coverage is described here. The GCDB data and the QQQQ data were used to interactively select the QQQQ lines that make the park boundary based on the legal descriptions derived from the legislation, wilderness memorandum and the land status map. These lines were put into the riparian boundary data using ARCEDIT. The resulting data was edited in ARCEDIT and topology constructed using ARC/INFO.

Using the legal descriptions for the wilderness memorandum the isopleths used as boundaries for the wilderness were interactively selected from the hypsography data and put into the boundary data derived from the QQQQ data and riparian boundary data using ARCEDIT. The resulting data was edited in ARCEDIT and topology constructed using ARC/INFO.

The resulting polygons were edited, labeled, and attributed in ARCEDIT. Topology was created and the polygon data was processed to create three region subclasses, BNDY that depicts the boundary authorized by Congress, MANAGE that represent the lands managed by the National Park Service within and outside the authorized boundary, and WILD that represents the wilderness designated in the park by Congress, using ARC/INFO. Attributes were added to each region subclass attribute tables using ARCEDIT. Topology was recreated and a spatial index was created for the data using ARC/INFO.
