Description:

Abstract:

On August 14, 1962, President John F. Kennedy issued Presidential Proclamation 3486, which modified the boundary of Natural Bridges National Monument by including lands that contained additional cliff-type prehistoric Indian ruins as well as space for construction of a visitor center and administrative buildings. Approximately 320 acres of land known as Snow Flat Spring Cave and Cigarette Spring Cave were excluded from the Monument, since they no longer contained features of archeological value. This Arc/Info coverage comprises the polygon that shows the current extent of the Monument.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data is to provide digital documentation of the historical development of Natural Bridges National Monument. The intended use of all data in the park's GIS library is to support diverse park activities including planning, management, maintenance, research, and interpretation.

The coverage was minimally attributed; the only user-defined attribute is ACRES, the number of acres contained in each polygon. No formal tests were conducted to verify the accuracy of the polygon boundary or the calculated acreage. There are discrepancies between the original report of the acreage comprising the Monument and the acreage calculated on the basis of this digital coverage.

Polygon topology was built for the coverage using the BUILD command in Arc/Info 8.1 for NT Windows. No dangling nodes, slivers or open polygons exist in the data.

The proclamation provided the description of the boundary in township, range, and section coordinates. This description was used during the digitization process.

Process_Description:

The digital Monument boundary was created on the basis of its description in the original document (Presidential Proclamation 3486). The Monument description is in terms of its relation to township, range, and section boundaries. A section is the base unit in the system, corresponding to a tract of land measuring 1 mile by 1 mile. In those cases where the description of the Monument border referred to whole sections, the corresponding section lines were clipped from the PLSS coverage and incorporated into the monument boundary. If the description referred to partial sections (i.e., 1/2 or 1/4), the boundary was completed by measuring off the distance and digitizing the line on-screen. The software used for the digitization was Arc/Info 8.0.
