- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This shapefile is a vegetation map of Weir Farm National Historic Site, Connecticut. A map showing the locations of the vegetation associations within the park was created following the USGS-NPS Vegetation Mapping Program protocols (The Nature Conservancy and Environmental Systems research Institute 1994c). Each vegetation association was cross-walked to the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS) or names modified from level II of Anderson's land use land cover classification system. The map is based on field work performed in the fall of 2003 and the summers of 2004-2005.
- Purpose:
-
This data set was created for Weir Farm National Historic Site for use in natural resource management.

State Geological and Natural History Survey staff assessed the thematic accuracy of the vegetation map by field visiting each of the 86 polygons attributed with vegetation association names. Discrepancies were noted and corrections to the map units were made. With the exception of the managed fields, the thematic accuracy of polygons attributed with Anderson level II categories (modified) was not assessed.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
Polygon geometry and topology were validated with ESRI ArcGIS v.9.2 to identify and correct gaps, overlapping polygons, and self-inersections.
- Completeness_Report: Vegetation polygons cover the entire park area.

Ecologists at the State Geological and Natural History survey of Connecticut determined the location of vegetation sampling points based on a review of: (1) Connecticut DEP 2001 black and white, 1:12,000 aerial photographs (2) field reconnaissance guided by National Park Service staff and (3) a vegetation map from a previous vegetation mapping project (Natural Diversity Data Base 1991). Vegetation plot data were collected in the fall of 2003 and spring of 2004 in accordance with NatureServe's accepted natural heritage sampling protocols. Due to deer over-browse, the TWINSPAN analysis was of minimal use for the determination of vegetation types. Therefore, ecologists utilized familiarity with the Connecticut vegetation classification and classified the vegetation using a pre-determined correlation of habitat conditions and the presence of woody indicator species such as mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium). The final units were compared to both the connecticut classification (Metzler and Barrett 2006) and existing National Vegetation Classifcation associations that were similar in vegetation composition, structure, and environmental setting. Polygons that represented land uses, such as residential and domestic grounds, managed fields, ponds and public roads, were delineated using shape files supplied by the Weir Farm staff and were attributed with names from the Anderson level II categories.
Mapping was conducted using a combination of aerial photo interpretation and field delineation using a Trimble ProXR GPS with a TSCe datalogger/display unit. This device was run with TerraSync software. The perimeter of each vegetation type was walked with a GPS unit to delineate most of the mapping polygons. Polygons such as the Common Buttonbush Wetland Thickets and the Mouontain Laurel varients of several of the Upland Forests were determined by the photo interpretation of 2001 DEP black and white aerial photos (1:12,000). Lines were drawn on acetate overlays on the photos and then screen-digitized in ArcView 3x. This combination of field-collected lines and interpreted polygons was converted into the final map. Polygons were attributed with the name of the Connecticut vegetation classification system and the National Vegetation Classification, or the name of the Anderson level II land use and land cover classification.
