Biocomplexity – Bird Food Ecology

PIERC Project Leader: Paul Banko, Ph.D.

Japanese White-eye bird Objectives:

Star  Determine arthropod prey in diets of forest birds

Star  Determine whether arthropod availability may limit forest bird populations

Accomplishments:

Star  Sampled diets of generalist birds: Japanese white-eye (alien) & Hawaii amakihi(native)
Star  Sampled arthropod availability across environmental gradient
Star  Integrated results with demography & disease studies

November '05
Significance:

Star  Generalists forage on wide range of arthropod prey
Star  Arthropod availability partially accounts for bird distribution & abundance across an environmental gradient
