Abstract for the poster presented at the 2002 North American Ornithological Conference

Population estimates, distribution and habitat associations for Hawaiian forest birds.

Richard J. Camp, Marcos Gorresen, Bethany L. Woodworth, and Thane K. Pratt. USGS Pacific Island Ecosystem Research Center, P.O. Box 44, Hawaii National Park, HI 96718.

The Hawaii Forest Bird Interagency Database Project has developed an ecological study that synthesized information from 65 variable circular plot surveys to model habitat associations, determine species distributions, and calculate population estimates for forest birds in northeastern Hawaii Island. Historical data from the 1977 USFWS Hawaii Forest Bird Survey and subsequent surveys (1987-2000) provided densities and distributions of forest birds, and ground-truthed measures of habitat types. We used Landsat 7 imagery and other geographic information to determine landscape and vegetation characteristics for non-overlapping 5.2 ha circular plots centered on 811 count stations. Species-specific habitat-association models were developed using vegetation type cover, canopy closure, canopy stature, vegetation diversity, rainfall, temperature, slope and topographic convolutedness. Density and population size estimates from count data were determined with the program Distance. Patterns of population density and habitat association are presented for Hawaii Amakihi (Hemignathus virens), Hawaii Creeper (Oreomystis mana), and Akepa (Loxops coccineus). Species-habitat models provide an effective method for determining distribution and population size information essential for monitoring programs and conservation efforts.
