Abstract for the poster presented at the 2000 Hawaii Conservation Conference

The Hawaii Forest Bird Interagency Database Project.

Richard Camp, Bethany Woodworth, Thane Pratt, Chris Collins, and Heather Howitt. USGS Pacific Island Ecosystem Research Center, P.O. Box 44, Hawaii National Park, HI 96718.

In 1976-1983, the US Fish and Wildlife Service conducted systematic surveys of forest birds and plant communities as part of the Hawaii Forest Bird Surveys (HFBS). Results of this effort have guided conservation efforts during the past two decades, but population estimates and range maps are now out of date. Since then, over 170 surveys of forest birds have been conducted, but the data are scattered among agencies and in many cases have never been analyzed. We present a comprehensive inventory of all forest bird census data collected over the last 25 years in a centralized, standardized, relational database. More than 7 natural resource agencies throughout the islands are cooperating in this effort. From 1976 to 1999, a total of 14,348 stations on 496 transects have been sampled at least once. As of May 2000, 131 surveys (77%) had been entered into the database and our efforts continue. Seventy bird species have been recorded, including 32 native and 38 alien birds. Of these, 42 species may be analyzed via the variable-circular plot method (22 native species), while 28 are best analyzed with other methods (10 native species). The ultimate goals of the project are to provide up-to-date population estimates for all native and alien forest birds, analyze trends in population size over the past 2 decades, and produce current maps of distribution and abundance. These data will be made available through the Internet to cooperators throughout Hawaii.
