Abstract for the 2001 Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge annual report

Status of Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge forest bird census data for tracking bird populations.

Richard J. Camp, Marcos Gorresen, Bethany L. Woodworth, and Thane K. Pratt. USGS Pacific Island Ecosystem Research Center, P.O. Box 44, Hawaii National Park, HI 96718.

This report presents the progress to date by the Hawaii Forest Bird Interagency Database Project (HFBIDP). HFBIDP has created an MS Access relational database that contains more than 750,000 bird records from all major Hawaiian Islands. In addition, HFBIDP works closely with Hawaii GAP on satellite imagery classification and mapping, Distance Sampling development team on new variable circular-plot analyses methodologies, and land managers and researchers throughout to address forest bird population concerns.

Analysis of Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge forest bird census data is outlined and a timeline for completing the analysis is provided with the following deliverables:
· Compilation of proofed HNWR forest bird census data, 1987-2000, in a centralized, standardized database.
· Production of Metadata for each survey, 1987-2000, conducted on the HNWR.
· Unstratified population size estimates for eight native and five alien birds on the HNWR.
· Maps of species abundance per station and extent of range on the HNWR and surrounding area.
· Analyze population trends based on unstratified estimates.
· Stratified population size estimates for eight native and five alien birds on the HNWR.
· Analyze population trends based on stratified estimates.
· Species density maps on the HNWR and surrounding area.
· Power analysis of sample size required to detect population trends.
· Write-up of procedures, results and conclusions in a project report.
