Alien Rat Control in Hawai`i

Objectives:

Evaluate the efficacy of hand-broadcast methods using the anticoagulant diphacinone for rat control in native montane forests

Demonstrate the efficacy of aerial applications over large areas

Accomplishments:

100% of radio-tagged rats died within about 1 week of bait application in both hand-broadcast and aerial-broadcast studies

Developed protocols for rat control to protect threatened and endangered plants and birds

Significance:

Highest joint priority for PIERC research identified by NPS and FWS

Data will be used for EPA registration package for aerial application of Ramik Green
