Biocontrol of Kahili Ginger

PIERC Project Leader: Donald Gardner, Ph.D.

Kahili ginger Objectives:
Star  Determine ability of the bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum to infect kahili ginger in HAVO
Star  Determine host specificity of the bacterium
Star  Establish inoculation methods

Accomplishments:
Star  Ginger-specific strain of R. solanacearum isolated from edible ginger
Star  Kahili ginger in upper elevation forest inoculated; found susceptible
Star  Bacterium encapsulated for field distribution

Significance:
Star  Kahili ginger aggressively invades undisturbed native forests
Star  Kahili ginger forms thick under-ground rhizomes; mechanical removal disruptive
Star  Geographically widespread
