Distribution, Status, and Ecological Stressors of Kauai Bird Species of Special Concern

Akikiki Objectives:
Star  Document numbers, range, and population trends of native birds in their last remaining habitat on Kauai

Star  Document patterns of expansion in exotic birds in native forest habitat

Accomplishments:
Star  Established and censused 35 new transects in the Alakai region
Star  Resurveyed 6 historical transects located in central Alakai
Star  Examined trends over time in range and abundance of 13 forest birds

Significance:
Star  First-ever systematic census of entire Alakai region (~100 km2) using detection-based methods
Star  Documented patterns of native species declines and exotic species expansions within this significant protected area
