PIERC Project Leader: Bethany L. Woodworth, Ph.D.

Black Rat Objectives:
Star  Determine the feasibility, cost, and effectiveness of ground-based rodent control in remote rainforest ecosystems

Star  Document the impact of rodent control on forest bird populations
Accomplishments:
Star  Documented cost & person-days required per km2 to reduce rodents to <5% of pre-treatment levels
Star  Documented the effect of rodent control on rodent abundance, forest bird productivity, population size, and nesting success
Significance:
Star  First and largest experimental test of ground-based rodent control in Hawaiian rainforest
Star  Model for ground-based rodent management projects on Hawaii, Oahu, Maui and Kauai
