Assessing Vegetation Changes Over 30 Years in a Montane Rainforest

PIERC Project Leader: James Jacobi, Ph.D.

dominant tree species Objectives:
Star  Assess changes in population structure of dominant tree species
Star  Evaluate changes in species richness and diversity
Star  Determine factors influencing the vegetation changes that have been identified

Accomplishments:
Star  Successfully relocated original sampling sites and raw data from 1970 survey
Star  Currently resampling the forest site using original methodology

Significance:
Star  A long-term study of dynamics of this vegetation type has never been conducted in Hawai‘i
Star  Will result in a better understanding of the stability of this ecosystem and the dynamics of the species it contains
