Background

Loyal has been the Chief of the National Park Service's Biological Resource Management Division, which provides science-based support for invasive species management, ecosystem restoration, wildlife management, and other biological issues to National Park Service Directorates, Regional Offices, and Parks. Loyal is well positioned to deal with Hawaiian science and resource issues, having been the NPS Endangered Species Program Manager, Chief of the Endangered Species Listing Branch for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Pacific Islands Ecoregion, and a Research Botanist at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he studied extinction rates and patterns in island ecosystems. Loyal has a B.A. in Botany from the University of Montana, M.A. in Botany from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D in Botany from the University of British Columbia.
